She was quite an
interesting boat, as she was taken over half built and finished as
an aircraft carrier for convoy escort duties during WW2. She had a
very good war record, and many photos etc. were displayed in a glass
case in the passenger's part of the ship!
After the war, the flight deck was removed, and she was handed back.
She was a very happy boat to sail on, as being like an ugly
duckling, nobody bothered with excessive "Spit and polish" and after
leaving the Port Auckland, it was like being at Butlins!
Roger Head My dad was on
board this ship from 1969 to 1970. His name was Sid Lee. He sailed
out to New Zealand docked at Auckland where he jumped ship only to
get picked up. He spent a year in the prison Mount Eden then was
flown home to England 1971. Does anyone remember him? Many thanks
his son Danny Lee.
