Beaumont - I was on Hurunui Sept 1960/Sept 61 2 trips to NZ she
was a happy ship the second trip was more eventful. About 4 days
outward the ships baker was taken seriously ill and had to be
transferred at sea during bad weather. He was put aboard a passenger
ship and operated on saving his life. Our lifeboat crew were each
presented with a silver tankard in recognition of their services.
Homeward bound one of our officers died and was buried at sea. But
that's the way of the seafaring. some of the names I remember are
stewards Ryan Pugh, Geoff. English, Paul Hind, cook Allan McNally.
The captains name was Pover. Its 50 years since I saw them last, I
hope they're still getting their beer ration. |
