HMS Caroline

Built for conditions in the North Sea, rather cramped, they were admirable little ships which formed the basis for wartime development and bore the brunt of the fighting, often surviving severe damage. Class distinctions included three funnels, cut-away bows, and the after 6" gun superimposed. As built the armament was 2-6" and 8-4" but this proved unsatisfactory and the 4" guns were all or partially replaced by a smaller number of 6" guns. Tripod masts were fitted in 1917. All war service was in the North Sea, some going to overseas stations after the war. In 1913 this class was rated as Armored Light Cruisers. The Caroline is still afloat and there are plans to dock her beside Warrior.
